Yes, everyone should know how to write some code. It should become the new basic arithmetic.
Should everyone become software developers? No. Obviously not.
An informed citizenry, capable of understanding what goes on under the hood on these little supercomputers we carry everywhere with us, is the only way people in a connected world will be able to understand and grasp the social and political issues of this new world--especially when it comes to privacy and security in this online reality we've created.
Otherwise, those that do understand the devices we all carry, and the code that powers them, will be able to use them to take away the basic freedoms we have fought for over the past few centuries.
